Captain Nemo Powerfin Review - Brett Vercoe
A few months back I decided it was time to upgrade my old fins. There is a lot of hype in the market-place regarding the increasing variety of composite fiber compound fins and at first I was a little sceptical as to whether there was any real advantage over my trusty old black Esclapez blades. After a bit of research I decided to try the Captain Nemo Powerfins, made by World Championship fin swimmer Bogdan Lyashuk. They have proved to be very popular with many South African spearfishers and are starting to become well known here in Australia.
3 months later I can honestly say that the Powerfins have greatly improved my diving. I picked the medium stiffness blade (No.4) and have found it perfectly suited for my needs. The blades don't tire me out when I'm working in currents. Descents and ascents are quicker, requiring less effort and fewer power-strokes. I particularly like the powerful, slow and fluid movement achieved with these fins and I believe this is an advantage when stalking timid fish species.
Captain Nemo Powerfins are available in six different stiffness grades depending on your individual needs. They range from stiffness 1 for casual snorkeling to depths of 20 metres, right through to stiffness 6 which would suit hardcore depth record attempts. I find the stiffness 4 best suited to my spearfishing needs and suitable for freediving to depths of 30 metres.
Compared to other fins I've used I like the feeling of 'springing' up from the bottom of your dive when you decide to return to the surface with the Powerfins. Deep divers who like to achieve neutral buoyancy at 20 metres or more will appreciate the improved ability to power down the first ten metres or so without wasting too much energy. I've found that both my bottom time and maximum depth have been extended considerably while using the Powerfins.
The footpocket is a very important feature of any high performance blade as this is the power transfer interface. Too soft a pocket and energy is wasted. Too firm a pocket and you'll have blisters on your blisters! Comfort in the fit is another important feature so that the fin load is shared across the maximum surface area of your foot, again avoiding blisters and rub areas. I'm totally satisfied with the performance of the Captain Nemo Powerfin footpocket and I believe the designer has done a great job. The fit is snug with no excess movement or rub points and you can actually feel the efficient energy transfer to the blade. Footpocket sizing uses the European standard.
Captain Nemo Powerblades are constructed from an advanced Composite Fiber compound. The manufacturer claims this material is impact resistant, has a high modulus of elasticity, excellent resistance to scratching, superb energy transfer, and unmatched durability. I'm not known for being kind to gear and the Powerblades have had their share of scrapes both in the boat and out. They've been trod on, dragged across reef and bent to extreme angles, yet despite this they've held up remarkably well with no sign of wear other than the usual scratches.
I'm very happy with the Powerblades and find them to be far superior in performance to any fins I have previously used. In all respects the Powerblades have lived up to the manufacturers claims. They're comfortable, powerful and offer a huge advantage for deep diving spearfishers. I recommend them highly. I got my pair through Adrenaline Spearfishing.

Dear Bogdan,
Yesterday I finaly test the fins.
Not too deep (15m) and this is what I think about
it.
I've test it comparing with another models from Beucaht,
Omer and Picasso.
The Nemo was absolutly the faster in water.
With them we can arrive to bottom easyer than the
other ones. I could check that I arrive to bottom
a few seconds before with more balance. When we leave
the bottom, we can get speed imediatly. Even with
a lot of weight they are very power.
I test two situations. First I take of some weigth
from belt and test the power I have to do to go down.
Then I put much more weigth to test the power I need
to back the surface.
I'm 95 kg and I was using a 12 kg weight belt, a 5mm
wetsuit, and the fins took me easy from the bottom.
The foot is very soft too. I was afraid because I
use the Cressi fin and his foot pocket is very good
but the Nemo is very smooth and is great too.
I can swim slowly and get more speed. Are really a
top gun fins
In conclusion I'm very happy with this fins. They
will make the 30m deep pinacle I use to hunt in Azores,
shorter.)
